At Tabak Law, Social Security Disability is one of our core practice areas, and we’re always staying up to date on the latest changes that could affect how individuals apply for and receive the benefits they deserve.

Recently, we joined The Morning Blend to talk about some of the most important updates happening right now in the Social Security Disability (SSDI) application process. If you or a loved one is considering applying, here’s what you need to know.

New Identity Verification Requirements

One of the biggest changes is the new identity verification step being introduced by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Before you can even begin your application, SSA now requires individuals to create a MySSA account and verify their identity online.

This change is designed to combat fraud and ensure that benefits are going to the correct individuals — especially in light of growing concerns around AI voice scams and identity theft.

Phone Applications Are Being Phased Out

In the past, applicants had three options: apply online, by phone, or in person. Moving forward, SSA is expected to eliminate the option to apply by phone, directing most applicants to use the online system or make an in-person appointment.

Appointments will be required for most in-office visits, though limited exceptions may be made — especially for individuals facing technical issues or those who have to travel long distances to reach a Social Security office.

Changing Direct Deposit? That Now Requires Verification Too

Another important update affects those already receiving benefits. If you need to change your direct deposit information, you’ll be required to complete identity verification through your MySSA account before any changes can be made. While paper checks are still used in rare cases, most beneficiaries receive funds electronically, so this step is critical for security.

How an Attorney Can Help

While these changes are intended to protect claimants, they can also add extra stress or confusion, especially for first-time applicants. Working with a Social Security Disability attorney can help simplify the process. In some cases, applications submitted through an attorney may be subject to fewer verification hurdles, at least as these new procedures roll out.

That said, the SSA has made it clear that identity verification will eventually become standard for everyone, so it’s important to understand the steps early and be prepared.

Pro Tip: Use the Field Office Locator

SSA offers an online field office locator tool that lets you enter your ZIP code to find the office nearest to you. This can be helpful when scheduling appointments or determining where to go if you need to apply in person.
