At Tabak Law, we’ve spent the last 15 years helping veterans, Social Security disability applicants, and injured workers secure the benefits they rightfully deserve. Recently, our own Monica Irelan Karas, attorney and partner, had the chance to discuss our mission on The Morning Blend.

Every day, we fight for those who have served our country and those who need support due to disabilities. If you or a loved one is struggling with a VA disability claim, we’re here to help.

Who Qualifies for VA Disability Benefits?

Veterans who have served in any branch of the military with an honorable or general under honorable discharge may qualify for service-connected disability benefits. But getting approved isn’t always simple. Veterans must meet a three-part test:

  1. A Current Disability – You must have a medical condition affecting your health today.
  2. A Service-Connected Event – Your injury or illness must have occurred during your time in service.
  3. A Medical Nexus – There must be medical evidence linking your current condition to your time in service.

While some veterans are covered under presumptive conditions (such as Agent Orange exposure or the PACT Act), most need to prove their case through medical records and service documentation.

Can You Work and Still Receive VA Benefits?

We often get asked whether veterans can work while receiving VA disability compensation. The answer depends on the type of benefits:

  • Standard VA Disability Compensation – Most veterans can work while receiving benefits.
  • Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) – If you can’t maintain substantial gainful employment due to your service-connected disability, you may qualify for TDIU benefits.
  • Additional Support – If you’re housebound or need a caregiver, you may qualify for extra compensation.

Why We’re Passionate About Helping Veterans

Helping veterans is personal for us. Many of our team members are veterans themselves or have close connections to the military. Our partner Monica Ireland Karis grew up in a military family—her father was a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, where water contamination led to severe health consequences for many who served there.

At Tabak Law, we see our work as a way to give back to those who have given so much for our country.

Why Do VA Disability Claims Get Denied?

Too often, veterans are denied the benefits they deserve due to:

  • Lack of medical evidence
  • Missing service records
  • Incorrectly completed paperwork
  • Failure to establish a clear service connection

The VA disability process is complex, and many veterans assume that simply filling out paperwork is enough. Unfortunately, it’s not. That’s where we come in.

When Should You Call Us?

If you’re considering filing a claim, have been denied benefits, or don’t know where to start, we can help at any stage of the process. Our team can evaluate your case, connect you with medical experts, and fight for your benefits.

Free Consultations—We Only Get Paid If You Win

We know many veterans worry about legal costs when seeking help. That’s why we offer free consultations, and we don’t get paid unless we win your case. There’s no risk in reaching out to see if you qualify for benefits.
